Valley Rewind: White
Mar 12, 2023
This ca. 1920s-30s photograph features the White-Brown Motor Company in downtown Black Mountain. Located on Sutton Avenue, the building was originally home to Brown's Livery Stable, where brothers Clarence and Bert Brown offered livery services - horses and coaches - to travelers leaving and arriving at Black Mountain's busy train station as far back as 1895. In 1912, a great fire affected parts of downtown. The livery stable was burned down, with only the stone foundation remaining. When cars replaced horse and carriage travel, the livery stable was transformed into a modern car dealership in 1923, the White-Brown Motor Co. Today, this building houses Sassafras-on-Sutton.
