Although the motors are new, their combined output in the Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD remains at 402 horsepower.
Driving the rear wheels is a more powerful 255-hp electric motor, while a smaller 147-hp asynchronous motor sits up front.
The new powertrain is more efficient than the old one, boosting range to an expected EPA figure of 254 miles.
The AWD XC40 Recharge continues to use a 75.0-kWh battery pack with a DC fast-charging rate of up to 150 kilowatts.
The dual-motor XC40 Recharge feels just as quick as before—we clocked a 4.3-second 60-mph time in a 2021 model.
Revised suspension settings include softer springs and revalved dampers to improve ride quality. Adaptive dampers aren't offered.
Volvo says the revised XC40 Recharge AWD weighs roughly the same as before, which is about 4800 pounds.
The interior is roomy and attractive, although some of the materials lack a premium feel. We loved our sample car's gray cloth upholstery, though.
